Lesson activities to accompany the vignette "Age of Steamers” from the acclaimed Knowledge Network series; Working People: A History of Labour in British Columbia produced by Landrock Entertainment. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Description
Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

Description
Animals are vulnerable beings in that they are subjected to situations beyond their control. Using animals as a bridge to discuss social justice issues can be a way to ease students into more sensitive and personal social justice issues such as racism and stereotyping. Included in this package are some outlined activities and discussion questions that should get the conversation started. These are designed to encourage students to think critically about where their beliefs and ideas come from and help them in their future discussions about issues involving people in society, as well as give them a chance to reflect on their own views on animals.

Description
Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

The Canadian Letters and Images Project is an online archive of the Canadian war experience, from any war, as told through the letters and images of Canadians themselves. Begun in August 2000, the Project is located in the Department of History at Vancouver Island University. Through the digitization of contemporary letters, diaries, photographs, and other related materials, the Project permits Canadians to tell their story, and Canada’s story, through their own words and images. The Teacher's Guide contains 12 English Language Arts and Social Studies lessons that support curricular competencies associated with historical thinking.

Description
This text is illustrated with updated graphs, photos and cites the work of hundreds of scientists and organizations such as the IPCC, NASA, Environment Canada, Royal Society of Canada, and Natural Resources Canada, to name a few. My resource is an update on the science of climate change, extreme weather, protecting nature and biodiversity, advancing renewable energy, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions with frequent reference to Canada and in particular British Columbia. Global impacts, mitigation and adaptation are explained throughout the text. My ten years of research cites reputable journals, national and international organizations and the media. Research covers climate change from the Arctic to the Antarctic, projection of climate change, how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, El Nino/La Nina, extreme weather, renewables, the oil sands and transport of bitumen, and Canada's contribution at the UN COP meetings. This book is meant as a resource for our youths to make wise decisions about their future. **Revised edition uploaded September 2019.

Description
Here is a cross-curricular unit on the diversity of living things and where they live. It includes lessons that explore living and non-living things; the differences between a need and want; and the biomes within Canada. There are lessons for outside, in the class, and computer labs with the intention of inquiry and student driven learning. Included is the interactive student notebook, a test, and an assessment for a 3D biome box project - with the intention that all 3 items are weighed evenly when accumulating evidence of learning.

IN FRENCH - This guide provides teachers with a framework for teaching environmental education through an integrated approach. Facilitating environmental education within all curriculum areas rather than isolating it shows the importance of the environment on students’ daily lives and within their community. The Experiential Learning Cycle Model (direct experience, critical reflection, conceptionalization) is explained. As well, the principals for conceptualizing environmental education are described through the CARE model (complexity, aesthetics, responsibility, and ethics).

Description
This document contains tips and tricks for teaching the newly proposed Environmental Science coursework that will be implemented with the BC Draft Curriculum in the near future. My goal was to provide teaching strategies, assessment suggestions, field trip opportunities, and classroom ideas that are student led learning opportunities. In this document, you will NOT find worksheets or seat work. My hope was to provide invigorating ideas involving Environmental Science that will spark debate and critical thinking in your classroom. This document may be used or adapted for any science class. This was done as a Teach BC Assignment for my education coursework with the UNBC Education Program. I hope you enjoy it!

Description
The Exploring the Great Bear Sea Secondary Curriculum Resources are based on the film The Great Bear Sea: Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future, by Green Fire Productions, and can be used to engage students on an inquiry-based, educational journey through the Great Bear Sea. The Great Bear Sea is a new name given to the North Coast of British Columbia (BC), an area that extends from Campbell River on Vancouver Island to the border of BC and Alaska. This region of British Columbia’s coast is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, has enormous cultural significance to the people who live here, and contains important resources for BC’s economy.
