This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

Our Ancestors and Our Dogs is part of a program about dogs and First Nations. It is about how the First Peoples of North America have lived with dogs for a long time. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. It tells us how to care for our dogs so that we can live with them safely and respectfully.

Living in a Good Way with Dogs: Our Stories, is an educational resource created by First Nations specifically for First Nations' learners. Stories about dogs shared by First Nations Elders and community role models form the foundation of the materials, bringing to life their experiences and wisdom. This Overview outlines the resources. There are six units in the program, each with a special focus that is relevant for students from kindergarten to grade eight. Entire units or single activities can be used to accommodate your audience. Through Elder teachings, tales from role models, histories of First Nations’ relationships with dogs, and fun activities, students learn to build healthy and safe relationships with their four leggeds. Each unit comes with an instructor guide, student activity book and audio recordings from Elders and role models. A set of posters provides students with a visual reference for important concepts in each unit.

This lesson uses Deborah Ellis’s short story “Through the Woods” as a catalyst for conversation around questions that are useful in examining the impact of cannabis use and regulation on individuals and relationships. “Through the Woods” is about a day in the life of Matthew, a 14-year-old boy who buys cannabis at school to take to his ailing grandmother who raised him until she became too sick to care for him. The story is ripe with easy-to-see themes that young people are sure to question naturally and/or identify with (e.g., stereotypes about cannabis dealers, users and non-users; risks and rewards of selling/buying/using cannabis; and reasons for using). As such, the story can be used to help students develop their skills in asking good questions as they interact with a story and its characters in more complex ways. This lesson aims to deepen students’ understanding of relationships between peers, family members and others as well as the complex nature of human drug use.

Pleasure is the motivation for many things people do in life. One of the many ways people choose to experience pleasure is by using drugs, whether it is caffeine, tobacco, cannabis or alcohol. Yet, seeking pleasure is something that we are sometimes made to feel guilty about. This is particularly true when it comes to drugs. So why might it be important to talk about pleasure in the context of drug use? Well, it turns out that, for all of us, our motivations operate within a tension between short-term pleasure and long-term goals. Furthermore, the pleasures of drug use are inextricably bound up with its risks. We cannot effectively talk about the one without the other. This lesson plan aims to engage students to think more critically about the concepts of pleasure, pain and risk related to drug use and to explore why pleasure is often missing from the conversation about drugs. This helps equip students to make more informed choices in their pursuit of pleasure.

Tom Petty (1950-2017) was an award-winning American musician and lyricist long associated with cannabis and other drugs. This lesson revolves around Tom Petty’s song You Don’t Know How it Feels (1994), which provides a rich opportunity to build drug literacy while exploring the connections between experiences, relationships, emotions, thoughts and actions. The song, with its reference to rolling a joint and sharing it with friends, sparked controversy at the time. This provides an opportunity to explore issues like censorship and artistic freedom. And the history of Tom Petty and his long-time band, the Heartbreakers, provides further opportunity to explore the impacts drug use can have on life, work and relationships. In each case, the use of dialogue rather than the transmission of the “right message” is likely to lead to greater understanding. The instructional strategies provided are examples of how this could be achieved.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel by Stephen Chbosky (and was made into a hit movie in 2012). Perks is a year-long series of ‘Dear Friend’ letters, written by 15-year-old Charlie, to an anonymous older teen whom Charlie believes is non-judgemental and won’t be freaked out by his references to drugs, sex and mental health issues. Charlie’s letters reveal that he is sensitive and very bright, but is struggling with post- traumatic stress disorder and filled with deep sadness owing to the suicide of his only school friend. He’s also filled with rage but doesn’t know why until the end of the story (when a sexual encounter triggers a repressed memory of his being molested by his aunt, who herself was a victim of child molestation by a family member). Perks provides various avenues for meaningful conversations around drug use, sexuality and wellbeing as well as dealing with mental health issues.

Recent policy changes relative to cannabis are creating debates in Canadian society. When addressing complex issues like drug use, people often find it difficult to have productive conversations. Dialogue provides a different approach. Dialogue is a manner of communication that involves two-way conversations where people not only speak to each other but also really listen. The goal is to leave the conversation with a better understanding of each other and the different perspectives that make up a community. School is a great context for citizens to acquire important dialogic skills. Cannabis legalization provides interesting opportunities to practice and hone these skills. “Turning to One Another” is a insightful poem by Margaret Wheatley about the power of talking with each other and creating social changes. This lesson uses the poem to explore different aspects of dialogue and its significance in the context of shifting policies regarding cannabis.

Students will learn from a variety of media, lessons, activities and discussions, with opportunities to brainstorm, share and compare, participate in class discussions and create graphic organizers. In original five-minute documentary videos, narratives of historical events are described first-hand by survivors. Written by teachers for teachers, the lessons are easy to use, thought-provoking and powerful. Minority groups such as Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and First Nations are represented in the resource to offer students a wide range of perspectives and well-rounded education on the topics presented. Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

My recommendations for 'Green Reads for Children Book List 1' was developed through the casting of a large net, taking into consideration suggestions from the BCTF PSA groups (2015, 2016), my fine colleagues at DLG and Champlain Annex in Vancouver, literary reviews on the web, and the Vancouver and Delta libraries, as well as parents and children. Printing Like a Pro! Printing Like a Pro! is a free cognitively-based printing program for the primary grades. It is evidence-based and designed for classroom use and for use with students who have printing/handwriting challenges. This program uses a developmental framework, teaching letters from easiest to hardest to form. Cognitive strategies include use of self-talk, and self-reflection and evaluation with a focus on key strategies for neat printing. Worksheet sets include letters, words, and sight word sentences as well as numbers.
