- When children learn about the individual nature of animals such as grizzly bears, they learn to care about their fate and also recognize the fragility of our ecosystems and the role humans play within it. This unit of study highlights the importance of grizzlies to our environment, provides students with a better understanding of the role they play in the ecosystem, and how we as citizens can help to keep bears (and our communities) safe. The unit of study was designed to align with the BC curriculum, allowing for easy adoption by educators, and contains five 45 minute lessons, with accompanying teaching tools. - Description
- During the activity, students pick up a natural object, such as a leaf, and make “I notice…” statements out loud with a partner, then share some of their observations with the group. They do the same with “I wonder…” questions, and with “It reminds me of…” connections. Then, students practice using these tools while exploring whatever they find interesting. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again.

- For decades, people have debated the question: Is there a Scientific Basis for Race? The answer is…still under discussion. Many argue that race is socially constructed and that we are all part of the same human race. At the same time, scientists continue to research health issues, like sickle-cell anemia or diabetes, that impact some racial communities more than others. Why? Your assignment is to explore a topic in which Scientists have explored or had to address the idea of race! This could be with regards to medicine, sports, public health, scientific testing, genetics, and more.

- Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.
