Description
For this narration, we focused on a Grade One student who was observed during their play outdoors in the rich winter landscape near West Boundary Elementary School. Reflecting on other ‘ordinary moments’ outdoors with children, we have also included snapshots that capture what children do when they are outside. Donna Boucher teaches Grade 3 at Sardis Elementary in Chilliwack, BC and is an active member of EEPSA (secretary). Growing up as a farm kid and early career work as a wildlife biologist developed her appreciation and connection to nature. This guides her practice as she provides lots of opportunities for her students to explore and engage with their natural world. Janine Fraser teaches Kindergarten and Grade One at Midway Elementary School in Midway, BC. She grew up exploring the forests and creeks around her school in North Vancouver and values opportunities to get kids outside. Natasha Burgess teaches Kindergarten and Grade One at Marysville Elementary School in Marysville, BC. While working on her Masters of Education through UVic, she became very interested in ecoliteracy and learning outdoors with young children.

Description
The Shoreline Cleanup Curriculum Guide encourages students to engage with nature in a way that immediately shows them how easy it is to make a positive change to our environment. We developed this K-7 curriculum guide to help you integrate the Shoreline Cleanup into your school year, using both indoor and outdoor lessons for your students. The multi-disciplinary Shoreline Cleanup lessons allow you to connect these lessons to your existing curriculum themes and units of study. You may use the unit as a whole or select individual lesson to compliment your planning. The cross-curricular activities in this guide will have your students making art projects, reading stories, running through obstacle courses, solving math problems, exploring biology and doing what they probably do best – having fun! We hope you are inspired to bring the Shoreline Cleanup into your students’ lives! Register you Schoolyard cleanup at ShorelineCleanup.ca

'Green Reads' for Environmental Learning for Children - Book / Media List 2 - is organized by 6 themes. The categories start with the internal / personal connection to nature and progress to the 'global citizenship' level. I do not see the levels as being sequential; each learning group will have its interests and curricular to consider. There are 54 recommended reads in total (to date).

A 'Book and Media List' of reviewed literature and media (film, websites) for children. This "green reads" book and media list was compiled over several years as part of a BCTF Inquiry Project with TELA and EEPSA members. The final inquiry question was: As an elementary teacher, how can I use selected children's literature and media as a springboard for experiencing and connecting to nature in our school and community environments?

Description
We live in a world of ‘mixed signals’ about how to stay healthy and enjoy life and the risks and rewards of substance use. It can be hard to decide which suggestions are right. Health related guidelines and recommendations have been developed by scientists and health researchers to help Canadians make decisions that promote health. But these guidelines often fail to acknowledge their own limitations or to place their recommendations within the context of broader social and political factors. This lesson introduces some of these guidelines and recommendations that can provide a springboard for critically reviewing particular behaviours (eating, physical activity, substance use) and exploring how such guidelines might be useful in making decisions about health and well-being. Rather than trying to “sell” students on a specific behaviour or belief, the learning activities should help students build the skills to explore and seek to understand and manage their own health.

In this lesson, I use physical activity to help students explore and learn about the various characteristics of a healthy relationship regardless of what type of environment they are in. Furthermore, rather than me explaining the interpersonal behaviour expectations for the class, students develop this list with their peers. I provide support (where/if needed) and observe along the way. The intention of the lesson is to build a sense of community, trust, and respect between the students, which could help: • Foster a safe and supportive learning environment • Enable peer to peer teaching, learning, and assessment of each other • Develop a sense of self within and beyond a team/group setting

Description
This activity helps children learn to integrate the sexual parts of their bodies with the rest of their bodies. The activity reinforces that the child is the owner of his/her body and must take responsibility for it. The teacher acknowledges that the private parts of the body are often ignored or given silly names, then provides the correct names. Next the children are given an opportunity to draw male and female external genitals on outline figures. The teacher makes clear that these parts are private, that they may feel good when they are touched, that touching is done only in private, and that, except for health reasons, no one has the right to touch someone else's private parts without permission.

Learning for Life is an education initiative that aims to develop the various aspects of digital health literacy and promote healthy lifestyle behaviours among upper elementary students and families in BC. Learning for Life provides students with the competencies to use technology to support their health, to critically assess information provided through technology, and to balance the helpfulness of technology with the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours (using Canadian guidelines). The initiative was created by a group of researchers in UBC Faculty of Medicine's Digital Emergency Medicine Office who explore and advance the use of information and communication technologies to connect people to quality health information.

Storytelling is a favorite way to develop personal and social responsibility. Stories teach by attraction rather than by compulsion. They invite rather than impose. Stories capture the imagination and stir strong feelings. Stories give hope and encouragement. They stir minds to think about other ideas and choices that are possible. The personal and social responsibility characteristics that form the basis of this unit are based on the Gitxsan understanding of seven foundation traits — the “seven Grandfathers shown on seven stones.”

Description
Research on the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions has grown substantially in the past 15 years, and has spread from clinical/medical interventions to more population-based application such as at the school level. For students, training in mindfulness practice has demonstrated improvements in working memory, attention, academic skills, social skills, emotional regulation, and self-esteem, as well as self-reported improvements in mood and decreases in anxiety, stress, and fatigue. This approach can be used at the start or end of class, or between activities; it can happen during a transition time, as a way to help students calm and prepare for a reflective activity after physical activity.

Welcome to Miss. Casella's Classroom! This is intended to provide free math and literacy lessons, as well as, to have an ongoing conversation with like-minded people. Emphasis is placed on social emotional learning, mystery, creativity, and imagination. Strongly, as a public educator, I feel these elements help to evoke independent critical thinking skills, while opening a gateway to optimism. Personally, I love philosophical metacognitive conversations. Inside all of us, there is a child. Let that child play. Fully, I support play-based learning/inquiry-based learning at all levels of learning. In these environments, people thrive by having the opportunity to do their own thinking, reaching their own conclusions independently or in a group. Centers, give way to incorporate the multiple intelligences and differentiated learning. Is it farfetched to believe Big Foot exists? Do fairies really exist? Why you ask? Well...why not! Dinosaurs once ruled this planet.

Most viewed on Miss Casella's Classroom. Sherman Smith saw the most terrible thing happen. We the readers are not informed of what it was. This story is gently told and illustrated. It is a call-out to reinforce how negative emotions manifest inside of us. Violent acts, don't always have to be stereotype examples involving people. Violence includes natural disasters, like floods or hurricanes. A car accident or a fire are other examples. Please know, we are all wearing the ruby slippers. We all have the power within ourselves to move forward in our lives. No, it isn't always easy. Remember, taking the first step, in anything, is the hardest step. Talk to someone today!

Two notes in two days from the bears! Being gay is just another kind of love. The bears inform us about the legalization of gay marriage in Ireland. Here in Canada too, people of the same gender can marry each other. The bears place emphasis on a number of points. Not everyone supports gay marriage, although, it was a majority rule. We always need to respect all views. How can we be all we can be when we're not allowed to be true to ourselves? The bears say, as long as you're not hurting yourself or others, you should be able to be true to yourself. If you can't be true to yourself, maybe you're not allowed to be or maybe you're too afraid for to be, to remember, that gay marriage didn't just happen overnight. It took a lot of courage, for people to stand up for something they believe in. What do you believe in? Will you take a stand? Taking the first step is the hardest.

Description
Endurance aerobic activities (like jogging, cycling, dancing, rowing and the like) have long been seen as reducing stress, relieving anxiety, enhancing mood and decreasing the perception of pain. The high that can sometimes accompany jogging even led to the creation of its own term, “runner's high.” There are various theories on how this “high” occurs related to the natural release in the body of endorphins, endocannabinoids or leptin. These “natural drugs” activate the same mechanisms in the brain as opioids, cannabis or other drugs. While the research on the “runner’s high” is not definitive, there is solid evidence that exercise, even in smaller doses, can boost your mood, raise your energy level, relieve anxiety and make you feel calm and relaxed. This on top of all the other benefits of physical activity!

Description
“Drugs cause addiction.” This was the conclusion drawn from repeated rat experiments in numerous university research centres in the 1950s and 60s. These studies had involved the use of tiny cages with contraptions that allowed isolated animals to drink drug-laced sugar water or inject drugs by pressing a lever. The rats consumed large amounts of heroin, morphine, amphetamine, cocaine and other drugs, sometimes not eating and dying through neglect. This led scientists to conclude that the drugs had innate powers that made them irresistible to rats and humans alike.

Through our work in over 20 countries, including in 88 of Canada's Indigenous communities, we have become an internationally recognized leader in the field of education and children's rights. In 2015, Right To Play partnered with Global Affairs Canada to develop the "Play Your Part" education initiative for Canadian elementary schools. Last year, we delivered this program in 215 Canadian schools in 7 provinces. The Play Your Part program provides students with an opportunity to explore topics of gender equality, global citizenship, and student leadership through an interactive, three-part program, lead by a Right to Play facilitator.
