For children to strengthen their ability to manage their behaviour when they are experiencing strong feelings, an essential skill is to identify their feelings. It is never too early to talk to children about feelings, build their feeling vocabulary and to help them see the link between feelings and behaviour. Linking these together demonstrates how our feelings can affect the choices we make. It can also improve children’s emotional-management.

This online course for teachers of grades 5-8 focuses on engaged citizenship, gender equality, and the need for gender parity in decision making. The program provides teachers with multi-media lesson plans and activities that culminate in a final project in which students discover and document the story of one political woman in leadership or governance in Canada. Divergent, by Veronica Roth, is the first of a trilogy, a series of young-adult dystopian novels set in a post-apocalyptic world. It explores themes related to individual and social identity as well as the use of science, and drugs in particular, as a means of social control. Citizens are divided into five factions based on their dispositions: Abnegation, for the selfless; Amity, for the peaceful; Candor, for the honest; Dauntless, for the brave; and Erudite, for the intellectual. Erudite scientists have designed a number of serums to be used in different ways for different populations for different reasons. At age 16, people must decide whether to stay with their family’s faction or join the faction best matching their personal aptitude. But then there are the Divergents. The prose is fast-paced but also provides a rich foundation for exploring many themes of interest to teens, including aspects of drug use and drug control.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a novel by Stephen Chbosky (and was made into a hit movie in 2012). Perks is a year-long series of ‘Dear Friend’ letters, written by 15-year-old Charlie, to an anonymous older teen whom Charlie believes is non-judgemental and won’t be freaked out by his references to drugs, sex and mental health issues. Charlie’s letters reveal that he is sensitive and very bright, but is struggling with post- traumatic stress disorder and filled with deep sadness owing to the suicide of his only school friend. He’s also filled with rage but doesn’t know why until the end of the story (when a sexual encounter triggers a repressed memory of his being molested by his aunt, who herself was a victim of child molestation by a family member). Perks provides various avenues for meaningful conversations around drug use, sexuality and wellbeing as well as dealing with mental health issues.

The Every Teacher Project is a national study of Canadian educators’ perceptions and experiences of LGBTQ-inclusive education, designed to identify and make widely available the collective expertise of teachers and educational workers on inclusive education practices for sexual and gender minority students. The Every Teacher Project attracted tremendous support from project partner The Manitoba Teachers’ Society and from every national, provincial and territorial teacher organization in the publicly funded school systems of Canada. With their help in recruiting, researchers completed the project with 3,400 survey participants and an additional 24 focus groups, far exceeding our initial goals and making this the largest study of its kind in the world to date. This thesis was written to complete a Master's in Educational Leadership at Vancouver Island University. This study investigated factors that encouraged public school teachers to participate or discouraged them from participating in their union. Survey respondents indicated ways and to what degree they participated both formally and informally, and responded to open-ended questions about the factors that motivated their level of participation. Three focus group interviews were conducted with high, medium, and low level participants, and the interview data were compared to survey results. The majority of teachers in this study reported a desire to be supportive of their union, and a willingness to become involved if an issue was important.

The documentary video Flood of Change shares the story of three youth in Nepal and their movement to take action around water, sanitation and hygiene issues. The story is told by Nepalese youth who filmed 70% of the final footage and found the words and images to share their story. In this video, we learn about a diarrhea outbreak that happened in the Western Region of Nepal in 2009. The outbreak affected over 5,000 individuals and caused more than 464 deaths in 18 districts. The majority of the deaths were people in the ethnic group known as Dalits or "untouchables" who are a low income group in Nepal and have poor access to sanitation facilities and little education on safe water, sanitation and hygiene. A group of youth from Kathmandu mobilized to visit the region and create awareness about the importance of safe water and sanitation in the affected area.

Tom Petty (1950-2017) was an award-winning American musician and lyricist long associated with cannabis and other drugs. This lesson revolves around Tom Petty’s song You Don’t Know How it Feels (1994), which provides a rich opportunity to build drug literacy while exploring the connections between experiences, relationships, emotions, thoughts and actions. The song, with its reference to rolling a joint and sharing it with friends, sparked controversy at the time. This provides an opportunity to explore issues like censorship and artistic freedom. And the history of Tom Petty and his long-time band, the Heartbreakers, provides further opportunity to explore the impacts drug use can have on life, work and relationships. In each case, the use of dialogue rather than the transmission of the “right message” is likely to lead to greater understanding. The instructional strategies provided are examples of how this could be achieved.

Description
The poetry chosen for study in this unit is primarily written in English, although some of the poets include words and lines from songs in their native languages. Students will hear voices from many diverse First Peoples communities but they will easily recognize a commonality of world view in the themes of the poems: respect for and appreciation of the natural environment, the importance of relations with family and community, trust in the wisdom of Elders, the power that comes from the spirit world, and the devastating impact of colonization. Students will also recognize that the structures and poetic devices used in crafting this poetry is similar to poetry written by non-First Peoples writers, but that the voices of the poets and their imagery is distinctly different.

The Vancouver Canucks ®, in collaboration with the NHL® and the NHLPA, are excited to announce a new education initiative called Future Goals. The Future Goals program makes two digital learning resources available to your district at no cost. Future Goals - Hockey Scholar is for students in grades 5-7, exploring real-life applications of STEM concepts such as area/volume of an ice rink, conservation of energy of a falling puck, and speed/velocity using skates. This will be available Summer 2015 (in both English and French). The other resource is our digital citizenship resource. It's available now and also no cost to your school. This is a web-based course for students in grades 5-8, covering topics such as cyberbullying, online safety and conducting online research.

This lesson plan has two parts. Part one uses a storybook to introduce and explore gender identity and gender pronouns (she/he/they). By incorporating books with gender-diverse characters in the classroom, students will appreciate the gender spectrum, fluidity, and the use of gender pronouns. My recommendations for 'Green Reads for Children Book List 1' was developed through the casting of a large net, taking into consideration suggestions from the BCTF PSA groups (2015, 2016), my fine colleagues at DLG and Champlain Annex in Vancouver, literary reviews on the web, and the Vancouver and Delta libraries, as well as parents and children. These 13 books are my personal outdoor education / spiritual "gems".
