The introductory unit sets the context for the course, with a particular emphasis on establishing awareness of First Peoples pedagogy and of the key features that make this course unique. Given the unique nature of this course, it is important for the teacher to establish a classroom environment that is welcoming and supportive. This unit includes a variety of activities for teachers to work with, including opportunities for community building, establishing the ground rules for respectful contribution and handling conflict, understanding and beginning to work with First Peoples’ pedagogical approaches, and much more. Much of the work of this unit involves students participating in small and large group discussion, as well personal response writing.

Our Ancestors and Our Dogs is part of a program about dogs and First Nations. It is about how the First Peoples of North America have lived with dogs for a long time. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. It tells us how to care for our dogs so that we can live with them safely and respectfully.

Using Eden Robinson’s novel Monkey Beach as a primary text, the students will explore the issue of lost people that is so resonant in First Peoples communities; beyond the novel, students will have the opportunity to examine other texts such as short stories, poetry, and essays that complement this theme. When studying the novel, the instructional methods will focus on literature circles (small-group, student-centred approach to the novel that allows all students in the class to have a voice) and reader response (writing to learn, not always as a finished, polished draft). When studying the other texts, the instructional methods will be a mixture of large-group and small-group activities that invite student voice for interpretation.

This section examines humour in Ian Ross’s Joe from Winnipeg series that allows for a gentle and personal criticism of social conditions. Ross’s popular “Joe from Winnipet” commentaries were written for CBC radio and television, and have been collected and published in a book series. In his “Joe” series, Ross deals in a light-hearted but insightful way with such issues as moose on the road, little dogs wearing nail polish, Batman and bandaids, Christmas cake, letter glue, odometer checks, immunization, and springrolls. Joe represents Everyman, and this universal appeal is what has made the “Joe” series a success.

Description
In this unit, students will learn to identify how animals were and continue to be relied upon and an important part of the lives of First Peoples — furs and skins for clothing and shelter, meat for food, bone and antler for tools and weapons, etc. Sharing stories and teachings from various First Peoples of the province of British Columbia will shed light on the diversity of the peoples, as well as a range of concepts in understanding the important role animals played in the beliefs, traditions and lives of the peoples. The resources used in this unit represent a variety of regions, including the Northwest Coast, Shuswap (Secwepemc), and Nunavut (Inuit), and the relevance of different animals in each location. To supplement these resources, teachers are encouraged to look for relevant oral and printed texts from the local region.

Living in a Good Way with Dogs: Our Stories, is an educational resource created by First Nations specifically for First Nations' learners. Stories about dogs shared by First Nations Elders and community role models form the foundation of the materials, bringing to life their experiences and wisdom. This Overview outlines the resources. There are six units in the program, each with a special focus that is relevant for students from kindergarten to grade eight. Entire units or single activities can be used to accommodate your audience. Through Elder teachings, tales from role models, histories of First Nations’ relationships with dogs, and fun activities, students learn to build healthy and safe relationships with their four leggeds. Each unit comes with an instructor guide, student activity book and audio recordings from Elders and role models. A set of posters provides students with a visual reference for important concepts in each unit.

Students will examine the role(s) of Trickster characters in the literature of First Peoples. Trickster characters come in a variety of forms; this unit will examine three of these Tricksters: Raven, Coyote, and Nanabush. Beginning with an introductory essay on Trickster, the students will explore literature from a variety of genres, including traditional stories, oral stories, short fiction, poetry, and film. The central question to be answered in this unit is “What roles does Trickster play in the literature of First Peoples?” Through the examination of various texts, students will come to understand that Trickster has been used by writers to teach lessons, involve humour, act as a symbol, provide social commentary, and a variety of other purposes. Despite these various purposes, the Trickster characters maintain some essential traits.

Description
Voices into Action is an online, bilingual, ERAC approved curriculum-based educational resource providing students with information on issues regarding human rights, prejudice, and hatred. Designed by curriculum experts, this program utilizes a wide variety of media (short documentary style films and compelling visuals) to present information on a history of human suffering, stemming from social injustice that is still a growing problem today. While meeting curriculum requirements, you can help students become better people, and make your classroom a better place for learning. Our media resources, along with teacher-led dialogue, give students many perspectives to consider, with opportunities for critical thinking and creative response. By understanding the history of human rights issues in Canada and around the world, they will also gain insight into current issues that occur in their world and their classrooms.

Afin de souligner le centenaire des premiers succès des femmes en relation avec le droit de vote au Canada, Historica Canada (le plus grand organisme du pays dédié à l’accroissement de la sensibilisation de l’histoire et de la citoyenneté canadiennes) a créé ce guide pédagogique. Les activités incluses dans ce guide ont été développées en ligne avec les concepts du Projet de la pensée historique du Dr Peter Seixas; elles complètent les curriculums canadiens des niveaux de l’intermédiaire et du secondaire. Le guide invite les élèves à approfondir leur compréhension de l’égalité entre les sexes et de la démocratie, grâce à la recherche et l’analyse, à des sujets de discussion intéressants et à des activités de groupe. Il demande aux élèves d’examiner les questions d’identité, d’équité, d’activisme et de justice sociale dans des contextes historiques et contemporains.

You Can Make a Difference includes lesson plans for seven projects students can do to take action for animal. Projects include speeches, presentations, displays, posters, petitions, letters, videos/skits and fundraisers. Each is outlined in a lesson format for teachers and worksheet/tip sheets for the students. Developing skills in responsible advocacy will give students confidence to make changes for causes in which they believe.
