- Description
- In this unit, students will create their own “All About Me” book — about themselves, their families, and their community. They will be gathering information over several weeks and storing it in their own individual file folders. They will have special visitors and visit local landmarks in the community. In the end, they will put all their work together to create a book. They will celebrate the completion of their book at a “Meet the Author” afternoon with their caregivers.

- Description
- Blue Planet Links (www.blueplanetlinks.ca) organizes over 300 links to water-related websites, books and articles, featuring a fresh look and the most up-to-date design. We are poised to be the go-to teaching resource for all things H20. See Teaching Resources to explore a countless array of unit lessons for different grades, or check out Non-Fiction and Activities for classroom games and projects. Older students could be encouraged to use the site for research as we feature sections with links devoted to such topics as aquaculture, climate change, groundwater, pollution; almost every water-related topic you can think of. Water is becoming a heavier topic to discuss in the classroom as it is over-used and abused. Students are learning of severe droughts, plastic-filled oceans, decreasing salmon runs… and are rightfully asking questions. Blue Planet Links puts the resources to thoughtfully engage with these critical issues at your fingertips, and theirs!

- The Israel-Palestine conflict is one of the most controversial issues in our contemporary world. This unit approaches the conflict through the vehicle of narrative constructed through the judicious use of facts and perspectives. The unit materials include a broad spectrum of resources, lesson plans and student assignments that will produce multiple narratives based on individual perspectives. The unit, which was initiated by the British Columbia Teachers’ Federation (BCTF) Representative Assembly, closes with a critical thinking exercise that asks students to identify the obstacles to peace and write their own narrative about the conflict.

- This unit gives students a chance to take a closer look at traditional circle dwellings and complete a project wherein they apply an understanding of circles, polygons, and surface area to complete a diagram and scale model of a traditional circle dwelling. This unit can be used to help students achieve the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Mathematics 9: C1 solve problems and justify the solution strategy using circle properties, including the perpendicular from the centre of a circle to a chord bisects the chord, the measure of the central angle is equal to twice the measure of the inscribed angle subtended by the same arc, the inscribed angles subtended by the same arc are congruent, and a tangent to a circle is perpendicular to the radius at the point of tangency; C2 determine the surface area of composite 3-D objects to solve problems; C4 draw and interpret scale diagrams of 2-D shapes; C5 demonstrate an understanding of line and rotation symmetry.

- Description
- For years, math resources have been introducing probability using illustrations such as flipping coins, spinning wheels, throwing dice, drawing marbles from a bag, and drawing/dealing playing cards. Although these situations lend themselves to teaching the concept of probability, and most students can relate to the items used, Aboriginal guessing games offer a fresh, entertaining, and culturally relevant means of teaching probability. This unit can be used to help students achieve the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Mathematics 8: D1 critique ways in which data is presented; D2 solve problems involving the probability of independent events.

- Description
- First, students look at the bow and compare the force required to pull back the bow string a certain distance. Students determine the linear relationship between force applied and draw distance using Hooke’s Law, will record data in a table, graph the relationship, determine the spring constant for the bow they are using, and answer one step algebra equations using Hooke’s Law. Then students are provided with the opportunity to see the connection between non-Aboriginal math and science concepts and the traditional management of Aboriginal territories. This unit can be used to help students achieve the following Prescribed Learning Outcomes for Mathematics 9: B4 explain and illustrate strategies to solve single variable linear inequalities with rational coefficients with a problem-solving context; B2 graph linear relations, analyse the graph, and interpolate or extrapolate to solve problems; B3.

- Description
- The past years have seen large numbers of refugees moving to Europe. This, and the rise of populist movements in Europe and North America, has led unions to develop activities engaging schools, local communities, authorities, etc. to promote the rights of migrants and build inclusive schools and communities. With the support of Education International (EI), exchange visits, information sharing and peer-learning activities allowed education unions to inspire each other and explore synergies across borders. This toolkit aims to build on these experiences and facilitate education unions to develop their work in this area. It also assists unions by exploring the issues around integrating migrants and refugees in education and sharing what others have been doing in this domain.
