Step one: Have students look at a picture for clues to answer who, what, where, when, why and how questions about the battle depicted in the picture. Step two: Have students examine primary sources (9 sources available). Teacher may choose to have students look at all 9 or allow students to select 6 to look at. Students will try to piece together the causes and components of the incident depicted in the picture presented in step one. Step three: Offer students a secondary source on the battle of Seven Oaks in order that they gain an overview of the Battle of Seven Oaks. I recommend TC2's Snapshots of Nineteenth Century Canada for this. Step four: Present the Culminating Task where students can create a short story, a new broadcast or a skit depicting an interpretation of stories behind the Battle of Seven Oaks. There is an assessment rubric provided and a self/team evaluation sheet. Make this your own. It is a lot of fun. I have tried it!

Learning for Life provides students with the competencies to use technology to support their health, to critically assess information provided through technology, and to balance the helpfulness of technology with the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviours (using Canadian guidelines). The initiative was created by a group of researchers in UBC Faculty of Medicine's Digital Emergency Medicine Office who explore and advance the use of information and communication technologies to connect people to quality health information.

When children learn about the individual nature of animals such as grizzly bears, they learn to care about their fate and also recognize the fragility of our ecosystems and the role humans play within it. This unit of study highlights the importance of grizzlies to our environment, provides students with a better understanding of the role they play in the ecosystem, and how we as citizens can help to keep bears (and our communities) safe. The unit of study was designed to align with the BC curriculum, allowing for easy adoption by educators, and contains five 45 minute lessons, with accompanying teaching tools. An extension pack containing grizzly bear artefacts, trivia playing cards, and a size chart is available to borrow.

The past years have seen large numbers of refugees moving to Europe. This, and the rise of populist movements in Europe and North America, has led unions to develop activities engaging schools, local communities, authorities, etc. to promote the rights of migrants and build inclusive schools and communities. With the support of Education International (EI), exchange visits, information sharing and peer-learning activities allowed education unions to inspire each other and explore synergies across borders. This toolkit aims to build on these experiences and facilitate education unions to develop their work in this area. It also assists unions by exploring the issues around integrating migrants and refugees in education and sharing what others have been doing in this domain.

You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. Living in a Good Way with Dogs: Our Stories, is an educational resource created by First Nations specifically for First Nations' learners. Stories about dogs shared by First Nations Elders and community role models form the foundation of the materials, bringing to life their experiences and wisdom. This Overview outlines the resources. There are six units in the program, each with a special focus that is relevant for students from kindergarten to grade eight. Entire units or single activities can be used to accommodate your audience. Through Elder teachings, tales from role models, histories of First Nations’ relationships with dogs, and fun activities, students learn to build healthy and safe relationships with their four leggeds. Each unit comes with an instructor guide, student activity book and audio recordings from Elders and role models. A set of posters provides students with a visual reference for important concepts in each unit.

Want to be a reflective teacher? A pedagogical narration is something I wrote on each child in my classroom this year as a formal report. It is a story that allows one to see inside a child’s imagination and thinking. It allows teachers to link the demonstrated knowledge of the child to the curriculum and core competencies. It's a wonderful way to honour the child.

Bullets, Blood and Stones: the journey of a child soldier, brings students face to face with the child soldier situation that occurred in Uganda when infamous warlord, Joseph Kony, abducted 60,000 children and forced them to join his Lord’s Resistance Army. Teachers who have used this book in their classrooms note that student interest is high as the story is fast paced and the characters are very relatable. Real life events in the book provide a perfect teaching opportunity to contrast the lives of children in other parts of the world and challenge the way in which students view themselves and their place in society. Although events in the story are horrifying, there are moments of warmth and humour that are uplifting and give hope to the human condition. Teaching resources, including chapter by chapter discussion questions, activities, and a power point presentation, are available on the resource page of White’s website.

My recommendations for 'Green Reads for Children Book List 1' was developed through the casting of a large net, taking into consideration suggestions from the BCTF PSA groups (2015, 2016), my fine colleagues at DLG and Champlain Annex in Vancouver, literary reviews on the web, and the Vancouver and Delta libraries, as well as parents and children. These 13 books are my personal outdoor education / spiritual "gems".

In this 'Tools for Thought' lesson developed by The Critical Thinking Consortium (www.tc2.ca) students use visual clues to explain images. They develop an understanding of the importance of making plausible inferences about an image in order to gather information about a historical or contemporary situation or place. It includes instructional suggestions for teachers (learn about the strategy, practicing the strategy, independent student activities) and resources for students (data chart, rating scale, student guide, samples and self-assessment rubric). An additional 80 Tools for Thought lessons are available to either individual members of Partner schools, boards and/or districts.

Choose Your Voice comprised of four action-packed units that comprehensively explore prejudice, stereotypes and historical oppression. Students will learn from a variety of media, lessons, activities and discussions, with opportunities to brainstorm, share and compare, participate in class discussions and create graphic organizers. In original five-minute documentary videos, narratives of historical events are described first-hand by survivors. Written by teachers for teachers, the lessons that follow are easy to use, thought-provoking and powerful. Minority groups such as Jews, Muslims, Sikhs and First Nations are represented in the resource to offer students a wide range of perspectives and well-rounded education on the topics presented. Students are encouraged to speak up against all injustices and not be bystanders.

This lesson plan looks to establish not only the relation between author and narrator in a text, but seeks to explain the context behind choices of high and low language, and how we use them in day to day life. As an introduction to language registers, this lesson will cover the basics of familiar language, standard language, and affected language, and highlights possibilities for adaptations in the ELL sphere. Though it remains specific to a single novel study, it can be amended to fit a variety of mediums.
