Le Canada et les conflits : Une perspective humanitaire : Mise au point par les enseignants de niveau secondaire à l’intention de leurs homologues, cette ressource éducative a pour but d’informer les jeunes et de leur donner les moyens de passer à l’action en vue d’atténuer la souffrance humaine. Illustrée au moyen d’exemples propres au contexte canadien, la nouvelle version 2016 comprend six modules qui abordent divers sujets liés au droit humanitaire international, dont les crimes de guerre, les réfugiés, les crises négligées, les inégalités entre les sexes, les principes humanitaires ainsi que les mécanismes favorisant la justice et l’engagement des jeunes. Canada & Conflict: A Humanitarian Perspective: Designed by and for high school teachers, this educational toolkit was developed to inform and empower youth to take action toward alleviating human suffering. Using Canadian examples, the revised 2016 edition is a complete toolkit comprised of 6 modules that touch on issues of International Humanitarian Law such as war crimes, refugees, neglected crises, gender inequality, humanitarian principles, mechanisms for justice and youth engagement. Canada & Conflict is directly complementary to academic subjects such as civics, social studies, history, geography, law, language arts and the humanities and is available in both English and French.

Our Ancestors and Our Dogs is part of a program about dogs and First Nations. It is about how the First Peoples of North America have lived with dogs for a long time. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. It tells us how to care for our dogs so that we can live with them safely and respectfully.

Resource 1 is a journal article from Kristen Lems entitled "Using Music in the Adult ESL Classroom" This article outlines ELL friendly activities that incorporate music to further understanding of sentence structure and grammar. Resource 2 is a video of a live performance of Hamilton: An American Musical. This video can be used in conjunction with a unit on musical genre, or musical theatre. Description
In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

During the activity, students pick up a natural object, such as a leaf, and make “I notice…” statements out loud with a partner, then share some of their observations with the group. They do the same with “I wonder…” questions, and with “It reminds me of…” connections. Then, students practice using these tools while exploring whatever they find interesting. This simple routine can help students get beyond seeing nature as a “green blur,” and lead them to never be bored in nature again.

With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.

As well, students will develop their ability to express their feelings through music. Psychomotor: Have the students move in the ways of the called out jungle animals. Moves such as flying, stomping, or galloping will be practiced. As well, students will enhance their ability to move about a space with a song as their guide.

I followed a student outside and captured an ordinary moment. I reflected on what I saw. I talked to another teacher for their thoughts. I talked to the parent of the student for their thoughts. I connected his learning with the curriculum and thought about what I would do in the classroom to further his learning and the learning of others. A pedagogical narration is the process and framework I used to make learning visible.

My recommendations for 'Green Reads for Children Book List 1' was developed through the casting of a large net, taking into consideration suggestions from the BCTF PSA groups (2015, 2016), my fine colleagues at DLG and Champlain Annex in Vancouver, literary reviews on the web, and the Vancouver and Delta libraries, as well as parents and children. Printing Like a Pro! Printing Like a Pro! is a free cognitively-based printing program for the primary grades. It is evidence-based and designed for classroom use and for use with students who have printing/handwriting challenges. This program uses a developmental framework, teaching letters from easiest to hardest to form. Cognitive strategies include use of self-talk, and self-reflection and evaluation with a focus on key strategies for neat printing. Worksheet sets include letters, words, and sight word sentences as well as numbers. In this 'Tools for Thought' lesson developed by The Critical Thinking Consortium (www.tc2.ca) students use visual clues to explain images. They develop an understanding of the importance of making plausible inferences about an image in order to gather information about a historical or contemporary situation or place. It includes instructional suggestions for teachers (learn about the strategy, practicing the strategy, independent student activities) and resources for students (data chart, rating scale, student guide, samples and self-assessment rubric). An additional 80 Tools for Thought lessons are available to either individual members of Partner schools, boards and/or districts.
