Description
The Digitized Okanagan History project provides online access to historical materials from BC's Southern Interior. We digitize photographs, documents, maps, newspapers, and other records held by local museums and archives. These are excellent materials for teaching about local history, the Okanagan region, primary sources, and other creative topics. Students can find images of the Okanagan from over 100 years ago to inspire their curiosity and complement their work.

Description
This document contains tips and tricks for teaching the newly proposed Environmental Science coursework that will be implemented with the BC Draft Curriculum in the near future. My goal was to provide teaching strategies, assessment suggestions, field trip opportunities, and classroom ideas that are student led learning opportunities. In this document, you will NOT find worksheets or seat work. My hope was to provide invigorating ideas involving Environmental Science that will spark debate and critical thinking in your classroom. This document may be used or adapted for any science class. This was done as a Teach BC Assignment for my education coursework with the UNBC Education Program. I hope you enjoy it!

Description
Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

Description
The PIR Live Event program engages classrooms across Canada in dynamic online webinars about a range of topics, introducing students to Canadian researchers, professionals, and facilities. Each PIR Live Event webinar features a Q&A with a different guest expert and/or a virtual tour of a research facility — and it’s FREE to participate! Classrooms across Canada can join the discussion by submitting their questions during the webinar and getting answers in real time from our guest expert. If you can’t participate at the scheduled time for a PIR Live Event, you can submit your questions in advance to liveevent@pirweb.org and watch the video recording afterward on the Partners In Research YouTube channel with your class to hear the answers! PIR Live Events are interactive, dynamic, and a great way to bring virtual experts and other classrooms into your classroom. Canadian Prime Ministers come to life! There are two series of videos being currently made by this YouTube Channel. The first is a long version of each PM (between 6-12 minutes each) which incorporates all different aspects of history, including indigenous issues, and ends with a critical thinking question. The materials go in depth into each Prime Minister and the issues in his time, including Indigenous history, international issues, and what life was like for people in this time. The second series is called 'Minister in a Minute' and sums up each Prime Minister in one minute. Retrospect aims to add more Canadian content to YouTube. Feedback welcome!!

Description
For over two decades, the Sanofi Biogenius Canada (SBC) program has nurtured young minds by challenging high school students to carry out groundbreaking research projects in the field of biotechnology. Grade 9-12 students apply in the fall to participate in the SBC program. Those selected for the SBC competition are matched with local mentors, giving students hands-on research experience in a professional lab setting. Participants compile their results and present their findings at regional competitions, vying for cash prizes and the chance to advance to the National and International Biogenius competitions. In past years, participant research projects ranged from cancer and Alzheimer’s disease, to agriculture and the environment. Many have since been patented and commercialized, garnering international media attention and igniting a true culture of innovation in Canada. Description
"Secret Path" was written by Gord Downie and illustrated by Jeff Lemire and illustrates the hardship and history of residential schooling in Canada . This book was inspired by an Anishinaabe boy named Chanie Wenjack who ran away from his residential school in 1966 and died on the way to his home with the Marten Falls First Nation. The story is a graphic novel accompanied by a soundtrack written by Downie, and was released in October of 2016. The release of the book was followed by an hour long special on CBC that tells the story in animation with the soundtrack. All of the proceeds from the book, album, and performance will go to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation. Here are some ideas for centers/stations that could compliment the use of Secret Path as a resource in text, soundtrack and film forms. The book has immense possibilities and because of its graphic novel form it could be adapted to suit the needs (and appropriateness) of a variety of grades and subjects.

Description
Here are Science and Social Studies A/B Year Schedules. These are meant for schools from K-7 who want to have alternating years teaching different Science and Social Studies curriculum. These schedules help with the split classes (i.e. Grade 3/4, Grade 4/5 etc) and make it easier for teachers to not have to teach two curriculums for split classes. Enjoy!

Description
Most people don’t realize that British Columbia has the richest biodiversity of any province or territory in Canada. Biodiversity can be measured in many ways, but the simplest way to measure it is by species richness—the number of species present. Within our species-rich territory, there are many species at risk, and in most cases, human activity is responsible for the decline of wildlife populations.

Description
With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.
