The Healthy Habits Challenge is a 30 day initiative where students can track 6 healthy habits on an online platform. Data is sent weekly to teachers. The Healthy Habits notes are: healthy eating, physical activity, screen time, water intake, sleep time, and mental health (journaling). Challenges are run three times per year and classes or whole schools can sign up. The entire challenge is turnkey and all resources are FREE. The challenges are supported by our team, our resources, and prizes can include athlete visits, gym banners for most active schools, and much more. The goal of the challenges are to instil healthy habits at the elementary school age and allow the students to learn about accountability and goal setting while providing data on progress.

Description
This Climate Justice in BC resource package was designed to provide teachers with classroom-ready materials to engage their students with how climate action intersects with social justice. The curriculum features eight modules designed for students in Grades 8 to 12 that explore climate justice within the context of BC’s communities history, economy and ecology. These lessons tie into subject matter and prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) already in BC’s curriculum, while providing a framework with which to unpack modern social and environmental issues, such as our industrial food system, consumerism and waste, transportation, and the development of a green economy.

Description
This resource is a tool kit of short PDF files that can be used in a variety of ways to improve a group’s ability to understand each other, resolve differences and make good decisions. It was developed to support a seminar series conducted by the Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy (CSELP) at SFU. The tool kit could be useful for staff meetings, school-based team meetings or union executive meetings for example.  It can also help individuals to deepen their understanding of the complexities of communication and improve their ability to be constructive participants in any type of discussion - whether as part of a group or more generally in their interpersonal relations.

Description
In this activity, students investigate the fascinating and complex process of decomposition and lay the foundation for deeper understanding of concepts related to matter and energy transfer in ecosystems. Through exploration and discussion, students go beyond simple definitions. Instead, students discover key characteristics of decomposition as they struggle with creating a sequence for decomposing wood and leaves. They learn the difference between physical decomposition and chemical decomposition and that many things contribute to decomposition, but certain organisms are classified as decomposers. They also search for and discuss evidence of decomposers, make model diagrams to further develop their ideas about the process of decomposition, and discuss decomposition and its role in the cycling of matter. Finally, students are challenged to recognize the evidence and impact of decomposition in the ecosystems they explore.

This guide provides teachers with a framework for teaching environmental education through an integrated approach. Facilitating environmental education within all curriculum areas rather than isolating it shows the importance of the environment on students’ daily lives and within their community. The Experiential Learning Cycle Model (direct experience, critical reflection, conceptionalization) is explained. As well, the principals for conceptualizing environmental education are described through the CARE model (complexity, aesthetics, responsibility, and ethics).

Description
This thesis was written to complete a Master's in Educational Leadership at Vancouver Island University. This study investigated factors that encouraged public school teachers to participate or discouraged them from participating in their union. Survey respondents indicated ways and to what degree they participated both formally and informally, and responded to open-ended questions about the factors that motivated their level of participation. Three focus group interviews were conducted with high, medium, and low level participants, and the interview data were compared to survey results. The majority of teachers in this study reported a desire to be supportive of their union, and a willingness to become involved if an issue was important.

The documentary video Flood of Change shares the story of three youth in Nepal and their movement to take action around water, sanitation and hygiene issues. The story is told by Nepalese youth who filmed 70% of the final footage and found the words and images to share their story. In this video, we learn about a diarrhea outbreak that happened in the Western Region of Nepal in 2009. The outbreak affected over 5,000 individuals and caused more than 464 deaths in 18 districts. The majority of the deaths were people in the ethnic group known as Dalits or "untouchables" who are a low income group in Nepal and have poor access to sanitation facilities and little education on safe water, sanitation and hygiene. A group of youth from Kathmandu mobilized to visit the region and create awareness about the importance of safe water and sanitation in the affected area.

Description
The Vancouver Canucks ®, in collaboration with the NHL® and the NHLPA, are excited to announce a new education initiative called Future Goals. The Future Goals program makes two digital learning resources available to your district at no cost. Future Goals - Hockey Scholar is for students in grades 5-7, exploring real-life applications of STEM concepts such as area/volume of an ice rink, conservation of energy of a falling puck, and speed/velocity using skates. This will be available Summer 2015 (in both English and French). The other resource is our digital citizenship resource. It's available now and also no cost to your school. This website holds a collection of lab activities for Chemistry 11 that are either guided inquiry (I provide the question, students figure out the procedure) or that build skills to support inquiry (ex: brainstorming procedures together, finding patterns in data, using claim/evidence/reasoning to make conclusions based on evidence). It should be expanded over the next year to include Chemistry 12 resources.

This lesson plan / activity would be a great jumping off point for starting Entrepreneurship or Personal Selling. The lesson starts off with review of what is entrepreneurship and then goes into the art of the handshake with discussion, video, and examples. Students get the opportunity to practice giving handshakes and from there The Pitch is introduced. The lesson closes with the students doing their very own introductions and elevator pitches in front of the class.

Description
Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.

Storytelling is a favorite way to develop personal and social responsibility. Stories teach by attraction rather than by compulsion. They invite rather than impose. Stories capture the imagination and stir strong feelings. Stories give hope and encouragement. They stir minds to think about other ideas and choices that are possible. The personal and social responsibility characteristics that form the basis of this unit are based on the Gitxsan understanding of seven foundation traits — the “seven Grandfathers shown on seven stones.”

Once all three modules are complete, students are officially a "Master of Disaster" and can receive their very own certificate of completion! All modules are customizable to suit the needs of each individual classroom. **If your classroom uses these resources, please provide feedback as outlined on the Master of Disaster website. Your students will be entered to win a draw for Master of Disaster prizes, including a starter emergency kit!**

In this unit, students will learn to identify how animals were and continue to be relied upon and an important part of the lives of First Peoples — furs and skins for clothing and shelter, meat for food, bone and antler for tools and weapons, etc. Sharing stories and teachings from various First Peoples of the province of British Columbia will shed light on the diversity of the peoples, as well as a range of concepts in understanding the important role animals played in the beliefs, traditions and lives of the peoples. The resources used in this unit represent a variety of regions, including the Northwest Coast, Shuswap (Secwepemc), and Nunavut (Inuit), and the relevance of different animals in each location. To supplement these resources, teachers are encouraged to look for relevant oral and printed texts from the local region.
