- In the process of “thinking globally but acting locally,” students will learn what challenges face peoples in Afghanistan. Following the reading of The Breadwinner, students will review selected articles from The Universal Declaration of Human Rights and demonstrate that they understand the concepts of human rights and of human rights violations through identifying and exploring human rights violations as portrayed within the novel. Students will be introduced to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. They will demonstrate that they understand the concepts of the rights of the child and of the violation of those rights through identifying and exploring human rights violations as portrayed within the novel Parvana’s Journey. Students will then explore and research an organization or a charity of their choice. By collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data related to an organization or a charity, they will begin to assess the impact of their financial contribution

The lesson examines the life Buck Suzuki who championed the rights of Japanese Canadian Fishermen and who was also an early advocate for the environmental protection of Salmon resources and habitat. The vignette is set within the context of the Internment of the Japanese Canadians during the Second World War. This is a unit created by the Labour History Project, a group of retired and current British Columbia teachers collaborating to develop a series of lesson plans, activities, and workshops focused on labour studies and labour history. Roald Dahl provides rich content for exploring the positive attractiveness, but also the destructive potential, of psychoactive substances. - I have been collecting great ideas and have put them together into a slide deck that can serve as a place for collection of evidence and reflections. This slide deck was the base of our work (feel free to take, modify and use it with your classes). https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1KZm4liDMUkQ3Y9KoF_0vCxutL2zeIJmsggYslflsmQM/edit?usp=sharing We used the Chrome extension called "Alice Keeler's Webcam Recording" to record our personal introduction videos. We used the chrome extension "Screencastify" to take screenshots of pictures or pages on the screen that showed work or areas of interest. We typed in answers in some spots and we added videos and images as well as evidence of our work and learning. Got questions? Feel free to send me an email. - The core competencies along with literacy and numeracy foundations and essential content and concepts are at the centre of the redesign of curriculum and assessment. Core competencies are sets of intellectual, personal, and social and emotional proficiencies that all students need to develop in order to engage in deep learning and life-long learning. Through provincial consultation, three core competencies were identified. Posters created by the BC Ministry of Education.

- For children to strengthen their ability to manage their behaviour when they are experiencing strong feelings, an essential skill is to identify their feelings. It is never too early to talk to children about feelings, build their feeling vocabulary and to help them see the link between feelings and behaviour. Linking these together demonstrates how our feelings can affect the choices we make. It can also improve children’s emotional-management.
