Description
Storytelling is a favorite way to develop personal and social responsibility. Stories teach by attraction rather than by compulsion. They invite rather than impose. Stories capture the imagination and stir strong feelings. Stories give hope and encouragement. They stir minds to think about other ideas and choices that are possible. The personal and social responsibility characteristics that form the basis of this unit are based on the Gitxsan understanding of seven foundation traits — the “seven Grandfathers shown on seven stones.”

Description
In this unit, students will learn to identify how animals were and continue to be relied upon and an important part of the lives of First Peoples — furs and skins for clothing and shelter, meat for food, bone and antler for tools and weapons, etc. Sharing stories and teachings from various First Peoples of the province of British Columbia will shed light on the diversity of the peoples, as well as a range of concepts in understanding the important role animals played in the beliefs, traditions and lives of the peoples. The resources used in this unit represent a variety of regions, including the Northwest Coast, Shuswap (Secwepemc), and Nunavut (Inuit), and the relevance of different animals in each location. To supplement these resources, teachers are encouraged to look for relevant oral and printed texts from the local region.

Description
This lesson introduces students to the Renaissance by focusing on art history and important innovations in the art world. Students learn to define a variety of art terms associated with the Renaissance and the Middle Ages and engage with the concept of visual symbolism. Students work towards writing a structured, descriptive paragraph outlining their own imagined symbolic Renaissance Portrait. By using writing planners and scaffolds, students write how they use symbolism to represent 5 of their personality traits in their Renaissance-inspired portrait. This lesson was originally designed for use in a Humanities 8 class (with scaffolding for ELL students). This lesson could be adapted for use in a variety of Art, Social Studies, English, and ELL contexts.

Description
In this 'Tools for Thought' lesson developed by The Critical Thinking Consortium (www.tc2.ca) students use visual clues to explain images. They develop an understanding of the importance of making plausible inferences about an image in order to gather information about a historical or contemporary situation or place. It includes instructional suggestions for teachers (learn about the strategy, practicing the strategy, independent student activities) and resources for students (data chart, rating scale, student guide, samples and self-assessment rubric). An additional 80 Tools for Thought lessons are available to either individual members of Partner schools, boards and/or districts.

Description
This document contains tips and tricks for teaching the newly proposed Environmental Science coursework that will be implemented with the BC Draft Curriculum in the near future. My goal was to provide teaching strategies, assessment suggestions, field trip opportunities, and classroom ideas that are student led learning opportunities. In this document, you will NOT find worksheets or seat work. My hope was to provide invigorating ideas involving Environmental Science that will spark debate and critical thinking in your classroom. This document may be used or adapted for any science class. This was done as a Teach BC Assignment for my education coursework with the UNBC Education Program. I hope you enjoy it!

Description
I followed a student outside and captured an ordinary moment. I reflected on what I saw. I talked to another teacher for their thoughts. I talked to the parent of the student for their thoughts. I connected his learning with the curriculum and thought about what I would do in the classroom to further his learning and the learning of others. A pedagogical narration is the process and framework I used to make learning visible.

How do you capture and share authentic learning moments and then add reflections and involve parents and other educators in the process? Use a pedagogical narration to make learning and thinking more visible for students, teachers, and parents. This sample explains the steps and shows an example you can follow with one of your students.

Description
Living in a Good Way with Dogs: Our Stories, is an educational resource created by First Nations specifically for First Nations' learners. Stories about dogs shared by First Nations Elders and community role models form the foundation of the materials, bringing to life their experiences and wisdom. This Overview outlines the resources. There are six units in the program, each with a special focus that is relevant for students from kindergarten to grade eight. Entire units or single activities can be used to accommodate your audience. Through Elder teachings, tales from role models, histories of First Nations’ relationships with dogs, and fun activities, students learn to build healthy and safe relationships with their four leggeds. Each unit comes with an instructor guide, student activity book and audio recordings from Elders and role models. A set of posters provides students with a visual reference for important concepts in each unit.

Description
Our Ancestors and Our Dogs is part of a program about dogs and First Nations. It is about how the First Peoples of North America have lived with dogs for a long time. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs. It explains how dogs have always been part of the life of First Nations People and how our relationship with dogs is changing. It tells how our feelings for dogs are important. It tells us how to care for our dogs so that we can live with them safely and respectfully.

This guide is meant to support professional leaning among educators but may be useful to parents or other adults who interact with children. It is designed to be used in self-directed inquiry groups but can also be used for personal study. It is about the concept of resilience, and it helps build the capacity to nurture students’ (and others’) ability to adapt to adversity. The readings have been carefully selected to provide an accessible introduction to the material and stimulate the application of the ideas into practice. The suggested discussion questions and activities are designed to help you engage with the material. You are encouraged to pursue other questions that might present themselves or experiment with other activities. The important thing is to engage with the ideas through an intentional process of inquiry. The material is arranged as a 4-session inquiry, but you can adapt it to fit your own availability and needs.

Resources shared are from the PSA Super Conference 2017 - Makerspace in the classroom workshop. Provides a big picture perspective of how MakerED connects to the new curriculum and ADST. Participants in this workshop will learn how the MakerEd movement with a STEAM focus is an effective way to integrate the Applied Design, Skills and Technology (ADST) curriculum into their classroom or school. We will explore the various buzzwords, resources, tools, technologies and potential assessment strategies found in classroom based makerspaces. Participants will have a hands on opportunity to explore littleBits (http://littlebits.cc/), Makey Makey (https://makeymakey.com/) and Micro:Bit tech (http://microbit.org/) and discuss strategies on how to connect ADST to a language arts/aboriginal unit.

The Every Teacher Project attracted tremendous support from project partner The Manitoba Teachers’ Society and from every national, provincial and territorial teacher organization in the publicly funded school systems of Canada. With their help in recruiting, researchers completed the project with 3,400 survey participants and an additional 24 focus groups, far exceeding our initial goals and making this the largest study of its kind in the world to date. Description
The National Inventory of School District Interventions in Support of LGBTQ Student Wellbeing was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of school-system interventions in reducing stigma and improving resilience of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and Two-Spirit, and queer and questioning (LGBTQ) students. It was conducted as part of the larger research program led by Dr. Elizabeth Saewyc at SARAVYC, UBC. The goal of this study was to identify which interventions have been implemented across Canada through an online survey of school district Superintendents/Directors, and what benefits were associated with the various interventions. The survey covered a range of possible interventions in support of LGBTQ students: LGBTQ-inclusive policy, generic and LGBTQ-specific harassment procedures, course content, GSAs, generic and LGBTQ-themed events, professional development, and teaching resources. The aim of this booklet is to enhance the knowledge of students about the history, cultures and traditions of Inuit and, in particular, those who live in Canada’s northern Inuit community of Salluit. By completing the lessons in this booklet, students will be able to: - express an appreciation for the strong traditions and unique culture of the Inuit people, in various ways - describe the various developments that affected Canada’s Arctic from its early history to the present - locate the community of Salluit and its neighbouring Inuit municipalities on a map of Canada - relate the similarities and differences between life in Salluit and life in their own community.
