Description
The Wealth Inequity Lesson Demonstration (WILD) is a game meant to be played by upper level high school students to support an exploration of global trade relationships. This project was created as a final assignment for a second year Education class at Vancouver Island University (VIU) under the direction and guidance of professor Paula Waatainen. WILD was created to demonstrate how different countries around the globe have different trade capabilities and natural resources available to them. This game highlights how affluent countries will perpetually prosper, while developing countries will struggle to fulfil their resource needs.

Description

Description
The lesson will start with a discussion of how students use their smartphones, then students will play the game and analyze the main character’s choices. Students will brainstorm examples outside of the game of how data collection influences their online habits. From there the class will segue into a discussion of how privacy and convenience become a “tradeoff” at levels of smartphone use, and how comfortable we as smartphone users are in making that trade. After this discussion, students will write a short reflection of roughly 3–5 sentences about which tradeoffs, and to what degree, they feel comfortable making in their smartphone use.

Description

Species at Risk Workshops are fun, hands-on, and solutions-oriented conservation workshops that focus on four species at risk in the Salish Sea: Southern Resident Killer Whales, Steller Sea Lions, Basking Sharks, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. These are a series of three inquiry-based workshops, that can be delivered virtually (the educator live streams to a class) or in-person for Grades 4-12. Students brainstorm and implement impactful stewardship projects to engage their schools and communities in aquatic species conservation. Workshops are designed to encourage critical thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. For virtual delivery, students are engaged through interactive tools such as Kahoot.

Students are empowered to make changes in their everyday lives to help reduce human-caused threats to species at risk and our oceans. Through their Youth Action Team projects, they are able to see how their actions have real-world impacts. Students learn to be aware of the personal choices they make in their daily lives, and how they can contribute to their communities and make the world a better place. This is all taught through the lens of ocean conservation, with a focus on four species at risk that live in the Salish Sea. Students learn how their actions can impact these animals. Creative/Critical Thinking - I can learn a lot about something new, consider different perspectives, generate and develop new ideas, and implement them in real life (students brainstorm and participate in group discussions about solutions to threats to species at risk) Communication - I can share and develop ideas with others, take on roles and responsibilities with a group, summarize key ideas and present what I have learned (achieved through Youth Action Team projects and presentations in Workshop 3) Personal & Social Responsibility - I can explain what my values are and how they affect the choices that I make, I can participate in classroom and group activities to improve the wellbeing of myself, my community, and the natural world (achieved through Youth Action Team projects that are implemented in the community to benefit the natural world)

Students are invited to create a survival plan of what they would need to survive if they were to live outside in their local habitat. They can only take from the earth and land and must consider factors like season, weather, habitat and ecosystem. "Netukulimk explains Mi’kmaw ways of life, tying together social and economic practices with systems of governance through time. Living in harmony, and taking only what you need, is the true essence of Indigenous ways of being and living." (Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre). Our linked video explores the concept in an accessible way for children and teenagers. Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre has an extensive guide about Teaching About the Mi'kmaq (pdf). This activity is one of our Indigenous perspectives content pieces. More to come. This activity is one of our Inquiry-tools (activities that encourage students to think about what they know and how they learn).

Description
This unit is designed to be highly adaptable to the needs of the teacher and their class. The activities can be applied to any short story. You can read multiple short stories in a row and wrap up the unit with the "Book Talks" lesson, or you can read a single short story and move on to other subjects. The projects should take students a full week to complete and they should be able to do them mostly independently. This model works well for asynchronous distance learning. However, the activities will easily transfer into the face-to-face classroom.

Description
These documents take a bit of time to introduce, but quickly become a staple for the English classroom. Based on research and various resources, I have put together a strategy to get students thinking and connecting with what they read. The guide helps to get students started with the concept of close reading, and the dialogue journal is to be used for longer works and/or works that cannot be written on. I recommend taking time to teach the subject-specific vocabulary and doing a guided practice of annotating. For the annotations, you can give a minimum number for the annotations themselves and/or the number of categories. To prepare for an essay, I have also directed students to have a certain number of annotations that can be used as evidence in their writing.

Description
Most people don’t realize that British Columbia has the richest biodiversity of any province or territory in Canada. Biodiversity can be measured in many ways, but the simplest way to measure it is by species richness—the number of species present. Within our species-rich territory, there are many species at risk, and in most cases, human activity is responsible for the decline of wildlife populations.

Description
In this activity the students read two newspaper articles about Adolf Hitler's "Knight of the Long Knives" and Joseph Stalin's "The Great Terror" purges. The students need to read the newspaper articles and answer short-answer questions. Students should already have a fairly general knowledge of Hitler and Stalin and be familiar with the concept of “purge.” The newspaper articles may be difficult for some students to comprehend, and this should be a consideration. You may wish to combine the documents into a single PDF to distribute to your students. I provide a single-point rubric, but this can be easily changed.

Description
This activity is designed to have students consider what it would be like for various people to live during the Great Depression. Three cases are presented, representing low to high income individuals and their families. Students can investigate 1-3 case studies and compare/contrast between them. The discussion questions can be modified to fit the number of cases the student will be analyzing. This can also be done in pairs or triads, with each student creating a budget for one case. Students can complete this activity and submit it online. Or print the answers out and send/scan/photograph them and submitting them digitally or in print. I use a single point rubric, but any other assessment can be easily inserted in.

Students should already have a fairly general knowledge of WWI, the Treaty of Versailles, and the concept of nationalism prior to doing this activity. The students should read the speech (I provide a loose paraphrasing with more accessible language – please feel free to use your name or make your own adaptation). The students can then answer the questions and submit their responses digitally or in hard copy. You may wish to tailor the questions more to specific concepts you are focusing on. The single-point rubric can be easily modified to fit other assessment needs/preferences.

Description
Students should have some cursory knowledge of World War II prior to doing this activity. The students begin by reading the “Dieppe Raid” essay created by Veterans Canada. The students then watch the video (link provided in the instructions) where veterans of the raid speak about their experiences. The students then complete the questions. You may choose to split this activity in half. You may also choose to covert and combine all files into a single PDF. I am providing a single-point rubric, but this can be easily modified to meet your needs. Please feel free to modify the activity as you see fit. The lesson is meant to evoke students to empathize with the soldiers, and to consider the cost of battles, as well as their signficance.
