Every year, the University of Waterloo has welcomed over 1000 high school students to our campus to participate in Kinesiology Lab Days. Though we are not able to welcome high school students to our in-person labs, we've gone virtual! Between November 23 and December 18, 2020, we'll be offering 3 free Virtual Kinesiology Labs that you can deliver to your students - either in class or online. You can run one lab or all three. There are no limits on the number of students who can participate. No special equipment is required. Please feel free to forward or share this information with your colleagues who may be teaching these courses. Go to http://uwaterloo.ca/kinesiology/labdays to see a short description of the labs being offered and complete the registration form. On November 23 you will be sent a link to access the labs with full instruction and help.

Species at Risk Workshops are fun, hands-on, and solutions-oriented conservation workshops that focus on four species at risk in the Salish Sea: Southern Resident Killer Whales, Steller Sea Lions, Basking Sharks, and Leatherback Sea Turtles. These are a series of three inquiry-based workshops, that can be delivered virtually (the educator live streams to a class) or in-person for Grades 4-12. Students brainstorm and implement impactful stewardship projects to engage their schools and communities in aquatic species conservation. Workshops are designed to encourage critical thinking, personal awareness, and social responsibility. For virtual delivery, students are engaged through interactive tools such as Kahoot.

Through their Youth Action Team projects, they are able to see how their actions have real-world impacts. Students learn to be aware of the personal choices they make in their daily lives, and how they can contribute to their communities and make the world a better place. This is all taught through the lens of ocean conservation, with a focus on four species at risk that live in the Salish Sea. Students learn how their actions can impact these animals. A grade 5 level, 7-8 lesson Earth Science unit package focused on the rock cycle and how materials from the earth are used as resources to build homes, roads and other things in our communities. Includes a section on the importance of reclaiming land after mines are closed, and exercises for students to do inside (some requiring parent or teacher supervision) and outside the classroom (suitable for online education). This package was produced by the BC Stone Sand & Gravel Association (a registered non-profit) with thanks to a generous donation from Summit Materials that allowed us to build the package with assistance from the Ontario Stone Sand & Gravel Association. Many thanks also to the volunteer members who spent many hours reviewing and revising the materials to ensure they are ideally suited for use here in BC.

This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

This unit is designed to be highly adaptable to the needs of the teacher and their class. The activities can be applied to any short story. You can read multiple short stories in a row and wrap up the unit with the "Book Talks" lesson, or you can read a single short story and move on to other subjects. The projects should take students a full week to complete and they should be able to do them mostly independently. This model works well for asynchronous distance learning. However, the activities will easily transfer into the face-to-face classroom.

Based on research and various resources, I have put together a strategy to get students thinking and connecting with what they read. The guide helps to get students started with the concept of close reading, and the dialogue journal is to be used for longer works and/or works that cannot be written on. I recommend taking time to teach the subject-specific vocabulary and doing a guided practice of annotating. For the annotations, you can give a minimum number for the annotations themselves and/or the number of categories. To prepare for an essay, I have also directed students to have a certain number of annotations that can be used as evidence in their writing.

The Democracy in a Box Activity Kit helps participants explore democracy and voting – past and present – in British Columbia. The kit includes fun activities and resources, including supplies for a mock election, election trivia cards, a map to explore B.C.’s electoral districts, and a timeline to learn about the history of voting rights in B.C. The kit is free and includes everything students and classrooms need to hold a mock election and begin exploring democracy and voting.

There are two lesson packages - one on the BC Election Process and Voting, and the other on Parliamentary Democracy and the Role of MLAs. The BC Election Process and Voting Lesson Package provides newcomers with essential information needed to participate in a provincial election. A voting simulation activity provides participants with an opportunity to experience each step of the act of voting as if they were at a physical voting station. The Parliamentary Democracy and the Role of MLAs Lesson Package gives newcomers a more in-depth understanding of the democratic process in BC, as well as the role of an MLA in representing constituents. The lesson packages teach adult immigrant and refugee English language learners how to participate in the democratic process when they become eligible as Canadian citizens.

In this activity, students are asked to reflect upon their own experience with dividing tasks. The students watch two short videos to learn about how government responsibilities are divided and about the impact these divisions have on elections in Canada. Students then deepen their understanding by completing activities at different learning stations, to explore the three levels of government and the different aspects that occur with elections on each level. Finally, students consolidate their understanding through both class discussion and personal reflection; and, are encouraged to explore how they can actively engage in the electoral process.

The BCTF is a strong supporter and partner of SOGI 1 2 3, a provincial program that helps educators make schools inclusive and safe for students of all sexual orientations and gender identities (SOGI). Within the context of COVID-19, critical social distancing measures have distanced teachers and students from their physical school communities. We asked Scout Gray, SOGI 1 2 3 Program Lead for BC and Alberta, to share what impact the pandemic is having on youth who identify as LGBTQ2S+, and what teachers can do to support them.

The students should have fairly good knowledge of WWI. In this activity they are tasked with research 5 war technologies (machine guns, poison gas, submarines, airplanes, and tanks). There are links for websites provided for each technology. As the students are researching they should complete the War Technologies Handout. After the students have done the research and completed the War Technologies Handout they can answer the significance question. I provide a single-point rubric, but you may wish to change it. Please feel free to modify.
