- Description
- Gratitude is linked with many physical, social and emotional benefits and is an important skill to foster with children and youth. When choosing an action to do so, however, research indicates that if the activity is forced or feels like homework it isn’t a good match. The outcome isn’t authentic and the results fall short of the potential benefits that experiencing gratitude offers. The most effective gratitude activities are ones that engage children’s interests and strengths.

- In this unit, students will create their own “All About Me” book — about themselves, their families, and their community. They will be gathering information over several weeks and storing it in their own individual file folders. They will have special visitors and visit local landmarks in the community. In the end, they will put all their work together to create a book. They will celebrate the completion of their book at a “Meet the Author” afternoon with their caregivers.

- Description
- Everyone has a unique story to share. Stories help us learn about ourselves, our families, and other people. Curiosity and wonder leads us to new discoveries about ourselves and the world around us. By reading “And Tango Makes Three”, we not only learn about penguins and the penguin life cycle, but about other family structures (i.e. same-sex families) and how same-sex couples can become parents. This lesson plan can be used cross-curricula with Socials, PHE, ELA, and may also be used in Science (i.e. if combined with a stronger focus on the penguin life cycle, habitat, etc.)

- Cannabis use often happens in a social setting and can be a way to have fun with friends, but it can also affect relationships (both positively and negatively). Likewise, relationships with family and friends can influence the choices young people make regarding substance use. With the help of Cycles, a film about youth and cannabis use, this lesson plan aims to engage students to think critically about cannabis use and how it can impact different types of relationships. A facilitator’s guide that provides further lesson plans is available in both English and French.

- Description
- This Climate Justice in BC resource package was designed to provide teachers with classroom-ready materials to engage their students with how climate action intersects with social justice. The curriculum features eight modules designed for students in Grades 8 to 12 that explore climate justice within the context of BC’s communities history, economy and ecology. These lessons tie into subject matter and prescribed learning outcomes (PLOs) already in BC’s curriculum, while providing a framework with which to unpack modern social and environmental issues, such as our industrial food system, consumerism and waste, transportation, and the development of a green economy.

- Here is a cross-curricular unit on the diversity of living things and where they live. It includes lessons that explore living and non-living things; the differences between a need and want; and the biomes within Canada. There are lessons for outside, in the class, and computer labs with the intention of inquiry and student driven learning. Included is the interactive student notebook, a test, and an assessment for a 3D biome box project - with the intention that all 3 items are weighed evenly when accumulating evidence of learning.

- Emotional regulation is an important human function. It allows an individual to focus on a task and suppress inappropriate behavior under instruction. Emotional regulation begins with the ability to identify various emotions and feelings. This activity can be used with students to help process emotions of various kinds. Opening the space for this kind of conversation helps build a sense of trust and open communication around emotions.

- Fairy Tales are a wonderful genre to explore how gender has been portrayed historically and in current times. Traditional fairy tales and fractured ones (modern day ones with a twist) allow primary students to think critically about how men and women are portrayed and compare these portrayals to their own families and communities. This instructional sample allows students to explore relationship dynamics, and factors that influence self-identity, through a gender-based lens.

- Description
- This lesson plan has two parts. Part one uses a storybook to introduce and explore gender identity and gender pronouns (she/he/they). By incorporating books with gender-diverse characters in the classroom, students will appreciate the gender spectrum, fluidity, and the use of gender pronouns. Part one consists primarily of discussion and a role-play activity. Part two builds upon part one and includes activities and worksheets.

- Description
- A Getting to Know You Session is intended to provide clarity about both the differences and the similarities between the “focus child” and the other students. Using a powerpoint presentation and class dialogue, photos of the child help to correct assumptions, provide accurate information and begin to remove hesitations about getting to know their classmate. To be successful, it requires an adult facilitator who is able to model non-judgmental, curious and accepting behaviours and who has a relationship with the parents or caregivers of the focus child.

- Description
- For this narration, we focused on a Grade One student who was observed during their play outdoors in the rich winter landscape near West Boundary Elementary School. Reflecting on other ‘ordinary moments’ outdoors with children, we have also included snapshots that capture what children do when they are outside. Donna Boucher teaches Grade 3 at Sardis Elementary in Chilliwack, BC and is an active member of EEPSA (secretary). Growing up as a farm kid and early career work as a wildlife biologist developed her appreciation and connection to nature. This guides her practice as she provides lots of opportunities for her students to explore and engage with their natural world. Janine Fraser teaches Kindergarten and Grade One at Midway Elementary School in Midway, BC. She grew up exploring the forests and creeks around her school in North Vancouver and values opportunities to get kids outside. Natasha Burgess teaches Kindergarten and Grade One at Marysville Elementary School in Marysville, BC. While working on her Masters of Education through UVic, she became very interested in ecoliteracy and learning outdoors with young children.

- The Shoreline Cleanup Curriculum Guide encourages students to engage with nature in a way that immediately shows them how easy it is to make a positive change to our environment. We developed this K-7 curriculum guide to help you integrate the Shoreline Cleanup into your school year, using both indoor and outdoor lessons for your students. The multi-disciplinary Shoreline Cleanup lessons allow you to connect these lessons to your existing curriculum themes and units of study. You may use the unit as a whole or select individual lesson to compliment your planning. The cross-curricular activities in this guide will have your students making art projects, reading stories, running through obstacle courses, solving math problems, exploring biology and doing what they probably do best – having fun! We hope you are inspired to bring the Shoreline Cleanup into your students’ lives! Register you Schoolyard cleanup at ShorelineCleanup.ca

- A 'Book and Media List' of reviewed literature and media (film, websites) for children. This "green reads" book and media list was compiled over several years as part of a BCTF Inquiry Project with TELA and EEPSA members. The final inquiry question was: As an elementary teacher, how can I use selected children's literature and media as a springboard for experiencing and connecting to nature in our school and community environments?
