This lesson about orcas was designed for grades 4-8 but can be adapted for primary grades and covers many curricular competencies in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Art. The cognitive strategies suggested are engaging and motivating for learners with a variety of learning needs and can also be applied to most learning sequences across the curriculum. They also include practice with the core competencies. These will provide many entry points for learners to explore the life, environment and struggles of the orcas. Granny’s Clan is an engaging story about an orca family. Students will instantly connect too many similarities between their family and Granny’s.

Description
This lesson is suitable for Social Studies classes studying the First World War and the Canadian Home Front as well as curriculum examining gender and racial tensions in the work force of early British Columbia. The time period of the lesson is set in the closing months of the war and the early recovery period from the Great War to early 1919. Additional overlapping intrigues to the women struggling for fair wages and better working conditions in the steam laundries of Vancouver was the death of Ginger Goodwin and the threats of a General Strike raised by the Vancouver Trades and Labour Council, as well as the onset of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic. The lesson materials also examine the racial conflict between the steam laundries and the Chinese hand laundries. Critical thinking and the use of primary sources are at the core of the lesson activities.

They can only take from the earth and land and must consider factors like season, weather, habitat and ecosystem. "Netukulimk explains Mi’kmaw ways of life, tying together social and economic practices with systems of governance through time. Living in harmony, and taking only what you need, is the true essence of Indigenous ways of being and living." (Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre). Our linked video explores the concept in an accessible way for children and teenagers. Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre has an extensive guide about Teaching About the Mi'kmaq (pdf). The teacher’s guide to the graphic novel "A Second Chance: A Gladue Rights Story" (which tells the story of Myra, an Indigenous woman who is charged with assault with a weapon and is about Gladue rights for Indigenous peoples) is a resource for secondary teachers that: -provides background information about Gladue rights and explains their relationship to relevant learning intentions in BC’s curriculum, -guides educators in using the graphic novel to meet relevant learning intentions, and -guides educators in meeting learning intentions relevant to the topic of Gladue rights. The guide provides ideas for teaching and learning about colonialism and reconciliation in courses for grades 10 to 12, within BC’s redesigned curriculum.

Reconciliation, which involves the transformation of Canadian society, takes many forms, including the criminal justice system’s recognition of Gladue rights. Canada’s colonial history and its ongoing impact has led to loss of culture and identity for many Indigenous people. It has led to significant educational, income, health, and social disparities between Indigenous peoples and other Canadians, including an overrepresentation of Indigenous people in prison.

The BC Election Process and Voting Lesson Package provides newcomers with essential information needed to participate in a provincial election. A voting simulation activity provides participants with an opportunity to experience each step of the act of voting as if they were at a physical voting station. The Parliamentary Democracy and the Role of MLAs Lesson Package gives newcomers a more in-depth understanding of the democratic process in BC, as well as the role of an MLA in representing constituents. Students should have some general knowledge about World War I, and in particular the causes of WWI. It would also be beneficial if the students had some cursory knowledge of the concept of nationalism. The students start by watching speeches by Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin to detect nationalism in their speeches. Then the students read a primer on nationalism to further inform their thinking. Lastly, the students will read three nationalistic speeches by Georges Clemenceau, Lloyd George, and Kaiser Wilhelm. As the students are reading they should fill out the Nationalistic Speeches Handout. Once they are done, they will pick the speech they find most convincing and justify their choice. This lesson can be split up and delivered online or hard copy. I provide a single-point rubric, but you may wish to change it to your own liking. Feel free to modify.

The students should have some general knowledge of the Dark Ages and monarchs. This lesson is comprised of a few activities. To begin the students watch a brief video on Charlemagne. After they are done, they will read a short biography of Charlemagne. The students' task is to appoint their own royal court. 10 noble's biographies are included. The students are to pick 5 advisors (economic, political, religious, military, foreign affairs) from the 10 nobles and explain their choices. Once they are done they will write a short diary entry, explaining what it would have been like to be Charlemagne and appoint the court. Please feel free to modify to suit your needs.

Constitute! is available online for free. The Constitute! website also provides a teachers’ companion—Constitute! Continuing the Journey—which includes detailed information regarding the context, historical background, and groups related to this film as well as activities designed for secondary students. Be the Change Earth Alliance (Vancouver-based Charity) Climate and Connection Unit with 15 Action Packs focused on Environmental and Social Justice, which any teacher can access for free when they sign up online. Where these come from our Student Leadership for Change suite of 40 Action Packs, teachers in your district already using them can update their account to access. Each Action Pack includes a fillable PDF students can work on and send back and can easily be distributed through platforms such as Microsoft Teams. Students explore their world views, connect global issues to a local context and take action appropriate for social distancing before tying it all together through critical reflection. Our curriculum embraces First People’s Principles of Learning and Teachers can see BC course connections and how each pack meets Core Competencies. When children learn about the individual nature of animals such as grizzly bears, they learn to care about their fate and also recognize the fragility of our ecosystems and the role humans play within it. This unit of study highlights the importance of grizzlies to our environment, provides students with a better understanding of the role they play in the ecosystem, and how we as citizens can help to keep bears (and our communities) safe. The unit of study was designed to align with the BC curriculum, allowing for easy adoption by educators, and contains five 45 minute lessons, with accompanying teaching tools. An extension pack containing grizzly bear artefacts, trivia playing cards, and a size chart is available to borrow.

This lesson is the introduction to a unit on Ancient Civilizations and introducing Ancient Rome. This lesson fits in with the Historical Thinking Project’s Big 6, specifically the concepts Establish Historical Significance as well as Historical Perspectives. Historical significance depends on any given student’s perspective on history. To have a historical perspective as a modern student can be challenging with this generation immersed in technology. Some historical landmarks included, but not limited to are the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Baths of Caracalla, Saint Peters Basilica, the Temple of Saturn the Roman Forum, the Vatican, Circus Maximus, Piazza Navona, Castel Sant’Angelo and St John in the Lateran. As Grade 7 curricular content, this exercise is focused on Ancient civilizations up until 7th Century, so it would be ideal to choose landmarks within this time period, but up to the discretion of the teacher.

A lesson plan on propaganda maps geared towards 20th Century World History 12 (adaptable to Political Studies 12 or Social Studies 11). In the modern era, students are constantly surrounded by digital and non-digital forms of persuasion. This is not new: propaganda and persuasion have long been used to influence the perspectives of citizens. Maps are spatially malleable and subject to intentional distortion, for military, geopolitical, economic and/or other aims. These persuasion techniques emerge in modern media. Students are first exposed to a variety of persuasive maps, where they learn to identify and critically analyze the aims and audiences of these maps. Then students are divided into groups that act as public relations companies who have been contracted to make a map that persuades U.K. audiences to vote to either leave or remain in the E.U. This activity increases understanding of how persuasive tools are used and how citizens must be critical consumers of information.

The past years have seen large numbers of refugees moving to Europe. This, and the rise of populist movements in Europe and North America, has led unions to develop activities engaging schools, local communities, authorities, etc. to promote the rights of migrants and build inclusive schools and communities. With the support of Education International (EI), exchange visits, information sharing and peer-learning activities allowed education unions to inspire each other and explore synergies across borders. This toolkit aims to build on these experiences and facilitate education unions to develop their work in this area. It also assists unions by exploring the issues around integrating migrants and refugees in education and sharing what others have been doing in this domain.

She was an advocate for trans rights and was known as the “bright light” among Vancouver’s LGBTQ community. You will meet Elders and others who share their stories about dogs and about caring for dogs. All of these people love and respect dogs and so they have shared their ideas about dogs with you. All are First Nations (Swampy Cree, Anishinaabe). We are proud to have them share about our peoples and our good ways with dogs. This unit is focused on learning about the ancestors of dogs and how our ancestors lived well with dogs.
