- Description
- Connecting With Nature is aligned with Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow, the Ontario Ministry of Education’s policy framework for environmental education. It is designed to help students understand how their daily choices affect nature. There are 16 cross- curricular lessons in the educational resource, each comprising idea / activity-based learning that inspires environmental stewardship in both the classroom and beyond, culminating in a celebration of all they have learned. In addition, students have the opportunity, through inquiry-based learning, to create their own “class foundation” focused on their collective interests and actions.

- Description
- Children need to play — especially outdoors. Direct, unstructured, and creative contact with nature allows children autonomy over their own outdoor experiences. Such experiences help them gain empathy for nature and their local surroundings, and understand their connections to the natural world. Outdoor play doesn’t take away from other learning — it enhances other learning. In the following pages, you’ll find ideas and activities to help connect kindergarten students with the outdoors through play. These activities have been designed to encourage wonder, curiosity, and discussion. They can easily be modified for slightly older children as well.

- Description
- A project-based learning activity in which students assess their community's ability to respond to crises and develop ideas for making it more resilient. Students participate in project-based learning over several days as they assess their community's ability to respond to crises that threaten both natural and human systems. Then they develop ideas for redesigning their community to be more resilient.

- Description
- Students take a census of an outdoor site, and look for organisms that perform different “jobs” in the biotic community. A biotic (or natural) community is made up of the various organisms that live and interact with one another in a particular environment. As in a human community, its members have different roles and depend on each other for survival. In this activity, students examine a study area to find out what organisms live there and the ecological jobs or niches they fill.

- The PIR Live Event program engages classrooms across Canada in dynamic online webinars about a range of topics, introducing students to Canadian researchers, professionals, and facilities. Each PIR Live Event webinar features a Q&A with a different guest expert and/or a virtual tour of a research facility — and it’s FREE to participate! Classrooms across Canada can join the discussion by submitting their questions during the webinar and getting answers in real time from our guest expert. If you can’t participate at the scheduled time for a PIR Live Event, you can submit your questions in advance to liveevent@pirweb.org and watch the video recording afterward on the Partners In Research YouTube channel with your class to hear the answers! PIR Live Events are interactive, dynamic, and a great way to bring virtual experts and other classrooms into your classroom. For more information and to see what webinars are coming soon, visit http://www.pirweb.org/pir/en/live-event/.

- Description
- Canadian Prime Ministers come to life! There are two series of videos being currently made by this YouTube Channel. The first is a long version of each PM (between 6-12 minutes each) which incorporates all different aspects of history, including indigenous issues, and ends with a critical thinking question. The materials go in depth into each Prime Minister and the issues in his time, including Indigenous history, international issues, and what life was like for people in this time. The second series is called 'Minister in a Minute' and sums up each Prime Minister in one minute. Retrospect aims to add more Canadian content to YouTube. Feedback welcome!!

- Description
- With animation, interactivity, and sound effects, Starting with Soil demonstrates how plants and animals cooperate to make the soil we need to grow healthy food. Kids learn that soil starts with bare rock and discover how long it takes nature to make one inch of topsoil. (Spoiler alert: it takes 500 years!) Different chapters convey the importance of pollinators and the critical roles animals, the weather, microorganisms, and cover crops play in organic farming. Designed for students ages 7-9, Starting with Soil allows users to plant seeds, build a compost pile, drag a microscope over different organisms in soil to get a better look, and view the symbiosis at work when corn, beans, and squash are planted together.
