- Description
- Connecting With Nature is aligned with Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow, the Ontario Ministry of Education’s policy framework for environmental education. It is designed to help students understand how their daily choices affect nature. There are 16 cross- curricular lessons in the educational resource, each comprising idea / activity-based learning that inspires environmental stewardship in both the classroom and beyond, culminating in a celebration of all they have learned. In addition, students have the opportunity, through inquiry-based learning, to create their own “class foundation” focused on their collective interests and actions.

- Description
- Children need to play — especially outdoors. Direct, unstructured, and creative contact with nature allows children autonomy over their own outdoor experiences. Such experiences help them gain empathy for nature and their local surroundings, and understand their connections to the natural world. Outdoor play doesn’t take away from other learning — it enhances other learning. In the following pages, you’ll find ideas and activities to help connect kindergarten students with the outdoors through play. These activities have been designed to encourage wonder, curiosity, and discussion. They can easily be modified for slightly older children as well.

- This resource is a tool kit of short PDF files that can be used in a variety of ways to improve a group’s ability to understand each other, resolve differences and make good decisions. It was developed to support a seminar series conducted by the Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy (CSELP) at SFU. The tool kit could be useful for staff meetings, school-based team meetings or union executive meetings for example. It can also help individuals to deepen their understanding of the complexities of communication and improve their ability to be constructive participants in any type of discussion - whether as part of a group or more generally in their interpersonal relations.

- *This lesson requires the use of an app. Teachers are reminded that they should check their school and district social media policies before implementing this in their classroom.* The digital world can be a positive community for kids and adults to express themselves and their creativity, but it also can have many pitfalls for kids to navigate on their own. At Mazu our users are learning to embrace the positive power of social media in a safe, curated space free of negativity, but we don’t want to stop there! We believe digital citizenship needs to be discussed and taught at an early age, so we invite your class to join our movement. You can help us to facilitate discussions on what it means to be a good digital citizen, and how we all have a part to play in making the online world a positive place. We’ve provided a sample lesson plan for you and some supplementary materials, feel free to use them to spark discussion and to add your own ideas. Become a part of our movement, discuss, create, and inspire what it means to be a good digital citizen!

- Description
- The Exploring the Great Bear Sea Secondary Curriculum Resources are based on the film The Great Bear Sea: Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future, by Green Fire Productions, and can be used to engage students on an inquiry-based, educational journey through the Great Bear Sea. The Great Bear Sea is a new name given to the North Coast of British Columbia (BC), an area that extends from Campbell River on Vancouver Island to the border of BC and Alaska. This region of British Columbia’s coast is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world, has enormous cultural significance to the people who live here, and contains important resources for BC’s economy.

- Description
- This thesis was written to complete a Master's in Educational Leadership at Vancouver Island University. This study investigated factors that encouraged public school teachers to participate or discouraged them from participating in their union. Survey respondents indicated ways and to what degree they participated both formally and informally, and responded to open-ended questions about the factors that motivated their level of participation. Three focus group interviews were conducted with high, medium, and low level participants, and the interview data were compared to survey results. The majority of teachers in this study reported a desire to be supportive of their union, and a willingness to become involved if an issue was important.

- Description
- The documentary video Flood of Change shares the story of three youth in Nepal and their movement to take action around water, sanitation and hygiene issues. The story is told by Nepalese youth who filmed 70% of the final footage and found the words and images to share their story. In this video, we learn about a diarrhea outbreak that happened in the Western Region of Nepal in 2009. The outbreak affected over 5,000 individuals and caused more than 464 deaths in 18 districts. The majority of the deaths were people in the ethnic group known as Dalits or "untouchables" who are a low income group in Nepal and have poor access to sanitation facilities and little education on safe water, sanitation and hygiene. A group of youth from Kathmandu mobilized to visit the region and create awareness about the importance of safe water and sanitation in the affected area.

- Description
- This lesson plan / activity would be a great jumping off point for starting Entrepreneurship or Personal Selling. The lesson starts off with review of what is entrepreneurship and then goes into the art of the handshake with discussion, video, and examples. Students get the opportunity to practice giving handshakes and from there The Pitch is introduced. The lesson closes with the students doing their very own introductions and elevator pitches in front of the class.

- Description
- Link to Laura Candler's File Cabinet on Cooperative Learning: Cooperative learning is a powerful teaching strategy that's more than just a passing fad. Research has shown that when implemented properly, students in cooperative learning classrooms outperform their peers in traditional classrooms. The key is knowing how to implement the strategies to foster interaction while making sure all students are held accountable. Dr. Spencer Kagan developed the "structural" approach to cooperative learning, and I've found it to be extremely effective. I highly recommend his book Cooperative Learning which is available from Amazon.com.
