Description
This activity explains the history of the Chinese calendar and celebration of the Chinese New Year. Students will make comparisons between the Chinese and Gregorian calendars and examine characteristics and elements of the year of the Pig.

Learning Standards
This three-page information package highlights this year's Chinese New Year and the Year of the Pig. Students learn about the characteristics of a Pig, including well-known celebrities who are also Pigs. As well, students will learn about the history and origins of the Chinese calendar and will identify the similarities and differences between the Chinese and more popular Gregorian calendar. Finally, students can respond to reading comprehension questions.
