This unit is designed to be highly adaptable to the needs of the teacher and their class. The activities can be applied to any short story. You can read multiple short stories in a row and wrap up the unit with the "Book Talks" lesson, or you can read a single short story and move on to other subjects.
The projects should take students a full week to complete and they should be able to do them mostly independently. This model works well for asynchronous distance learning. However, the activities will easily transfer into the face-to-face classroom.
Using language in creative and playful ways helps us understand how language works.
Students will be able to respond to text in personal and creative ways; use writing and design processes to plan, develop, and create texts for a variety of purposes and audiences; and transform ideas and information to create original texts.
