Description: This lesson about orcas was designed for grades 4-8 but can be adapted for primary grades and covers many curricular competencies in Language Arts, Science, Social Studies and Art. The cognitive strategies suggested are engaging and motivating for learners with a variety of learning needs and can also be applied to most learning sequences across the curriculum. They also include practice with the core competencies. These will provide many entry points for learners to explore the life, environment and struggles of the orcas. Granny’s Clan is an engaging story about an orca family. Students will instantly connect too many similarities between their family and Granny’s.
